Well, today was a bit of a mixed bag of crap. Following my application to Logica a while back, I saw I had the familiar graduate scheme subject line in my mass of junk in my inbox.
“Thank you for taking the time to complete your application and our tests. ['here it comes' you think] Unfortunately….” ARGHH! Oh, look, ANOTHER blow-out! I really shouldn’t make a habbit of checking my inbox first thing in the morning before work…becuase it smashes one’s self-esteem for the day. They seem so impersonal and arbitrary in their decision to reject me. My life feels like one depressing struggle against these corporate monoliths.
On a more optimistic note, I was very pleased to recieve my Masters degree certificate in the post. Forgive me for being pleased with this, but it confirms my ‘Commendation’ degree classification. I now look forward to graduation later this month – pics to follow no doubt.

However…frankly, all of that nonsense pales into utter insignificance when compared to what else I recieved today…Modern Warfare 2! The game I have been waiting for for eternity. I even got some new headphones to play it with!
I have had precious little time to play, but I’ve borrowed sleep time to play it. I hope to complete it over the weekend. I’m AMAZED by the gameplay so far – it helps me forget my actual life.

So it was Halloween last night — I thought it was gonna be yet another boring day on my own, but I ended up being invited out to Rock City so I thought I had better make a bit of an effort. Being a zombie fanatic, I thought I’d go as a survivor, or rather, whatever I had lying around! In this picture I actually look as if I have seen zombies.
The rest of this weekend will be spent trying to get my laptop to boot into Windows XP setup from a flash drive; so far it’s having none of it. This is really doing my head in; it has no optical drive!

I appear to have finished my work now…totally! Just need to print out one of the Appendices at the Print Shop, then I hand it in!
I ended up almost 2000 words over the limit, but after some considered cropping, it’s down to the required amount. I really hate having word limits – 6,600 sounds alot, but I could eaily fill double that if I was allowed! I guess that’s part of the skill — to be concise in one’s argument.
This research project into Internet Adoption in SMEs isn’t one of my favourite papers I’ve done, but it’s not too bad — I hope my marking tutor agrees. I can honestly say I’ve done my best on this course and don’t feel my enthusiasm lagged at any point. I have learned much more since starting in Oct 08 than I have at any other point in my education! I’ve found the best books and other texts I’ve ever seen, and been genuinely engaged by them.
Now I have that horrible gap after one finishes University where you decide what’s next. I look forward to graduation and seeing my mates again.

I guess now I can do fun stuff like get some gaming done, read magazines and tinker with my computer and listen to podcasts without feeling guilty of wasting academic time. I’ve done my best — my marks are now over to my tutors.

With about two-weeks to go, I had to make a bit of a change to my methodology, moving it from a multiple-case approach, or rather a questionnaire sent to a fairly wide sample, I’ve gone for a case study approach with my friends at !Beware Toys, a start-up in Nottingham.
Due to the change in methodology, I had to re-write that section to include details of the various case study protocols – it’s not just the same as a ‘sample of one’ it turns out! I essentially need to utilise more than one collection method – in my case, a qualitative questionniare followed by some additional questions based on some points raised earlier.
Once I have this rich data it should’nt take too long to write it up and wrap up my paper, after all these months in the making!

I also got my ‘Contemporary Issues’ assignment back today entitled ‘Marketing Under Threat’. I got 78% for that, so I’m well chuffed.
The essay does illustrate the way many companies implement their marketing and the way they perceive it. Companies think they know how marketing should be done and who should do it…and very often, they’re bang-wrong, especially longer-established companies who have become set in the ways of ye olde marketing. It’s described better in the article! My concern is that while I’ve been studying marketing in theortical terms, I’ve grown to think of it as an academic discipine, not one which actually happens in organisations. That is becuase the way marketing is done in real-life is probably NOT as exciting and interesting as it is in academia. But this is only because companies are not receptive to the prevalent theories and best practice coming from the journals, otherwise marketing would have changed its face many many years ago. The prophesising from the likes of Levitt, Kotler, Piercy and Porter are just not realised in real-life, and so appear to remain only of interest to academics. So my point is that a job in marketing might not be as exciting as the discipine is supposed to be, because of the short-sighted restraints and ill-informed superiors of those implementing it. I feel that my (currently non-existant) marketing job might not be about implementing these innovative, forward-thinking things I’ve learned, but more about fighting a loosing battle, trying to fly the flag for marketing 2.0.

Today is relentlessly miserable outside. It’s so depressing. I’m still waiting to see if AtosOrigin will take me on!

My supervisor is talking to Zanox.de a small internet-based company in Germany with whom I can do my research.
My concern is that becuase they are a 100% internet-based company, I’m not sure how applicable my diffusion of innovations theory will be, because for them, Web 2.0 isn’t an innovation it’s just their method of business full stop.

Allow me to share my conceptual map (at least TurnItIn anti-plagarism can’t recognise that when I submit my work!!):

As you can see, my research will baically be looking (qualitatively) at those antecedents leading to innovations and specifically, how that differs to the adoption of e-marketing and new media in SMEs. My thinking is that Web 2.0 and e-marketing is lightweight and so may be adopted much more readily than other innovations. Basically, what are the characteristics of those businesses who HAVE already adoped Web 2.0?

I have another lecturer who’s contacted various of her contacts to ask if they want to take part in my interviews, but thus far (as I pessimistically anticipated) I have had zero response. I now have a couple of options I guess; do a case study on Zanox, or do this without using interviews.
I’m just waiting to hear back from my supervisor now about a contact with Zanox.de.

I wanna go outside but it’s literally tipping it down.

…gonna kill some time on Photoshop.

What a day it’s been today. Very long indeed.
It was the conference which we’ve all been looking forward to where we could present our papers and ger some feedback. Ran from around 10-5, but then we all split off and went for drinks and for a meal after. Didn’t get back until well after 3am, meaning I’d been out for around 19hrs. That’s mad – I never do that! But it was the last day I guess and wanted to spend time with my colleagues. It was good opportunity to get photos too, as I might not see some of my friends again. Hopefully, they’ll be back for graduation in November.
I was able to grab a word with a lecturer who may be able to get me access to some SMEs who I can ask questions in relation to their e-marketing strategy.
The observations made by the academics who were critiquing my paper raised a couple of issues relating to the sample and way I am going to compare them. As yet, I’m not really clear on how this is going to work, but once I have gathered the feedback form these companies, I’m hoping it’ll slot into place into the conceptual map and I can make some meaningful conclusions. I might even find new adoption criteria not previously expected. The issue now will be about staying motivated, even though university is OVER (and I experience that depressive, disconnected feeling all over again). This has been my life for almost a year, now it’s gone.
I’m looking forward to getting the research done, recorded, coded, analysed and written up so I can do well at this – I owe myself that. Then I can move onto the next thing…whatever that might be. Today has certainly given me new ideas for the future, and integration with so many foreign students has been an inspiration.
Like I said…today was great for photo opportunities [to follow]. My camera seemed to attract much attention.

Just got back from Center Parcs today and found my (free) work experience application for DiVersity creative agency was ignored. I can’t even GIVE myself away.

So, that aside, I now need to focus on my Conference presentation on the 14th. It’s where I’ll have to present my research project which at present bears the working title ‘Web 2.0 Adoption in SME’s e-Marketing Strategy’ or something like that. That’s a pretty consise definition really.
My presentation, while not made yet, will cover what I want to examine, my theoretical framework and my research philosophy.

Due to the nature of what I’m going to be finding out, I’ll be using a qualititative methodology, teamed with an interpretivist epistemology which gives me the flexibility to literally interpret what I hear in terms of its application to my research objectives and framework. It almost sounds like I know what I’m talking about, yeah?!

Of course, that sounds well confusing, but I’m hoping to find very clear outcomes.

This conference will be the last time before graduation I’ll meet with my fellow students so I guess I’ll post some pics next week – ’cause there’ll be many taken me thinks!

Here’s my Literature review as a Wordle Word Cloud:
It’s just that I’ve had a pressing deadline which followed shortly from my Literature Review deadline. I handed it in today…at last! I wrote an essay about Strategy Implementation covering issues of organisational culture, internal politics, structure and market-orientation. Ideally, each one of those could be the title of an essay to be honest…but oh no!
I’m concerned that it may have lacked focus, as the literature was pulling me towards adjacent areas of theory.

I think out of all the academic works I’ve done, this one relied the work of Piercy a hell of a lot. I found his book ‘Market-Led Strategic Change‘ gripping (for a Marketing book!). He gave me so much material on which to comment and he writes in such a frank and to-the-point manner! Any marketer or anyone interested in Internal Marketing, Market Orientation and the like should read it!
It’s almost a book you’d read in your leisure time!

With the penultimate module behind me, we have now embarked on the last module of my MSc ‘Contemporary Issues’ which may be the contender for my favourite module after the strategy stuff. Once this is over at the end of June, I’ll be left to my own devices I guess to complete my research project – Adoption of New Media and e-Marketing by SMEs.

I’ll post more often now.

Almost done now with this literature review. I did finally pursue the line of looking at Web 2.0 adoption within SMEs. The word limit is 4,000, but I have already gone over this and not yet arrived at a conceptual map. It’s quite difficult to pull together the studies since lots of the literature is quite fragmented around internet adoption in SMEs. Also, only a fraction of it relates specifically to e-Marketing, with none relating to Web 2.0 specifically. I need to get it all structured so I can arrive at a conceptual map from which to derive objectives.
I guess the fun bit will be doing the primary research among SMEs. Never done that before!

Well, as you probably don’t know (or will do if you saw my ‘research poster’ post, we have to do some primary research for MSc Marketing. I can never decide what I want to do with these things, but initially, acording to the poster, I wanted to look at the extend of reliance of consumers on reviews when buying computer hardware.
I have now decided, in light of my recent e-marketing research that I want to look at how SMEs use (or don’t use) on-line marketing channels to engage customers with Web 2.0 platforms or just use it at all. If so, I wish to know what metrics they collect, how they act on them and how many people influence the adoption of their on-line presence.
In return, I might just link to said companies to help out in a small way with their SEO. Let’s see how it goes….
